Project Road safety fence

A broken stretch of road with no barrier between pedestrians and a steep drop. It only takes one moment of inattention. We decided not to wait for that moment.

Overview

The Challenge

During a community walk through Kheel Jasli, Dr. Priya Saklani noticed a section of road that had deteriorated significantly — the edge had broken away, leaving a steep, unprotected drop directly adjacent to the walking path. There were no warning signs, no barriers, and no fencing of any kind. Pedestrians, including children and elderly residents, walked past it daily. Vehicles navigated it with no margin for error.

The risk was real and immediate. A misstep at night, a distracted child, a vehicle sliding in wet conditions — any of these could have led to a serious accident or worse. The local authorities had not acted. No one else was going to.

Impact & Current status

The fence has been in place since installation and has had an immediate, practical impact on safety for everyone who uses that road.

Residents — particularly those with children and elderly family members — expressed relief and gratitude. What had been a source of quiet, daily anxiety was addressed directly and permanently.

What's next

Earth Healers Foundation moved quickly. We sourced and installed a sturdy safety fence along the dangerous edge of the road, providing a physical barrier between pedestrians and the drop. Alongside the fence, we installed caution boards in Hindi and English, clearly marking the hazard and alerting motorists and pedestrians to take care. The installation was carried out by our team in coordination with community members who helped identify the full extent of the hazardous stretch and assisted with the physical work.
