Kumarhatti Carnival

Change is serious work. But it can also be joyful. The Kumarhatti Carnival was a celebration of how far a community can come when it chooses to move together.

Overview

The Challenge

Environmental and community development work is sustained by momentum — by the feeling among participants that what they are doing matters, that progress is being made, and that the community is moving in the same direction. Without regular opportunities to celebrate what has been achieved, even the most committed volunteers and community members can lose heart.

At the same time, Himachal Pradesh — including regions around Kumarhatti — has been facing a growing drug menace, particularly among youth. Limited recreational outlets, lack of structured engagement, and social disconnect can make communities vulnerable to substance abuse and anti-social behaviour.

This created a deeper need — not just for environmental action, but for positive, collective spaces where people, especially young individuals, could come together, engage meaningfully, and feel a sense of belonging.

The Kumarhatti area had seen significant positive activity from Earth Healers Foundation and community members over the preceding months. It needed a moment of collective celebration — an event that would bring people together not around a problem to be solved, but around a shared achievement to be recognised.

What We did

Earth Healers Foundation joined the Kumarhatti Carnival — a community celebration bringing together residents, volunteers, local business owners, and stakeholders from across the area. The event featured activities, performances, and interactions designed to build connections between people who had been working toward the same goals but had not always had the opportunity to meet and celebrate together.Alongside celebration, the carnival also acted as a constructive alternative to negative influences — promoting community participation, sports, and shared experiences as healthier, more meaningful ways to engage.

Impact & Current status

Encouraging community participation — especially through sports and shared activities — improves physical health by reducing lifestyle-related diseases, supports mental well-being, and provides a constructive outlet for energy and expression.

It fosters social cohesion by bringing together people across age groups and backgrounds, reducing isolation and bridging cultural divides. Importantly, such engagement helps steer youth away from anti-social behaviour and substance abuse by offering purpose, connection, and positive identity.

Participation in these activities also builds essential life skills — teamwork, discipline, confidence, and self-esteem — while strengthening community bonds through shared, inclusive experiences.

What's next

Going forward, we seek to expand our presence at such events, inspiring youth to adopt sustainable practices and become active stewards of the environment.
