First Community event - Respecting Mother Earth

The first time a community gathers around a shared vision, something shifts. Not just in the village — in the people themselves.

Overview

The Challenge

In the early months of Earth Healers Foundation's work in Kheel Jasli, the effort had been largely practical and physical — cleaning, planting, building. But Dr. Priya Saklani understood that lasting change required more than practical intervention. It required a shift in the way the community understood its relationship to the natural world — a reawakening of the reverence for nature that is deeply embedded in the cultural and spiritual traditions of Himachal Pradesh but had been eroded by years of neglect.

The challenge was to create a moment that would be emotionally resonant, culturally rooted, and publicly visible enough to mark a genuine turning point in the community's engagement with its environment.

What We did

Earth Healers Foundation organised the first major community event in Kheel Jasli — centred on the installation of a large flex depicting Lord Shiva at the entrance of the village. The choice was deliberate and deeply considered: in Hindu tradition, Lord Shiva is intimately associated with the natural world — with mountains, rivers, forests, and all living beings.

Placing his image at the entrance of the village was a statement that this place was sacred, that it deserved respect, and that the act of littering or polluting it was not just an environmental transgression but a spiritual one.The flex was unveiled in a ceremony attended by community members, local leaders, and volunteers — a shared moment of reflection and rededication. Following the unveiling, a heartfelt prayer meet was held, bringing the community together in a spirit of solidarity, gratitude, and collective commitment to the Earth.

Impact & Current status

The event had a profound effect on community sentiment. For many residents, it was the first time they had gathered around an explicitly environmental cause — and the framing of that cause in terms of cultural and spiritual values, rather than regulations or obligations, made it resonate in a way that practical education alone could not.

The image of Lord Shiva at the village entrance remains, and continues to serve as a daily reminder of the value of the place residents call home.

What's next

Earth Healers Foundation plans to hold regular community events — seasonal celebrations, recognition ceremonies, and awareness gatherings — that sustain the sense of shared purpose and cultural connection to the natural world that the first event helped create.
